Mathew Joseph

Mathew Joseph is the Patron and Chief Advisor of Empower Trust, bringing over 25 years of leadership experience across international and Indian nonprofit organizations. His work focuses on the conservation of birds and habitats, particularly biodiverse wetlands across India.

Mathew has served as India Country Director for leading organizations including American India Foundation (AIF), Pathfinder International, and Nutrition International (formerly Micronutrient Initiative). His leadership has spanned large-scale programs in education, public health, nutrition, livelihoods, and climate change across all Indian states. He has also served as Regional Director for Population Services International (PSI) in Eastern India.

In 2008, Mathew led a nationwide social marketing and condom promotion program at the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. He has served on the boards of several government and non-government organizations, including the Jharkhand AIDS Control Society, Micronutrient Initiative India Trust, Pathfinder International India, Market Aligned Skills Foundation, and the Digital Equalizer Foundation, and has contributed to multiple government advisory committees.

Mathew holds an MBA and has completed an Advanced Program in Leadership from IIM Lucknow. An ardent birdwatcher and bird photographer, he founded the Delhi Bird Photographers group in 2014 and has since led hundreds of bird walks, workshops, and conservation-focused events, engaging thousands of enthusiasts. He also writes a popular birding blog at www.wildsideofmathew.com and has received several awards and recognitions for both his professional and conservation work.
